Not Part Of is having an alternative New Year’s Eve – on January 16! With 25 acts over seven hours, this is a a great way to liven up a dark and miserable month.

The fringe festival to Manchester’s International Festival is putting on a one day festival at the Dancehouse Theatre with comics, hip hops acts, a choir, poets dance and theatre.

There will also be an art gallery and a bazaar, and £1 of every ticket sold goes to Forever Manchester. Doors open at 4pm, with performances starting at 4.30pm, and finishing at midnight.

Not Part Of is run by Gareth and Beth McCann and they are both dedicated to making it easy for artists to get their work out there, when the International Festival shines its spotlight over Manchester. The festival brings a lot to the city’s economy, but doesn’t necessarily support smaller artists in the city, so Not Part Of was launched to give them a platform.

Too many television characters were quite frightening back in the early 80s – just look at the Krankies. Anyway Frank Sidebottom has made an appearance all for a good cause, so I will try to be brave. Although I have made this image as small as I could AND disabled the option for it to pop-up in a new window (sorry Frank lovers).

Frank launched Forever Manchester’s karaoke-athon, which will raise money for Manchester charities. Called 24 Karaoke People, it will involve teams of warblers blasting out Manchester tunes for one hour each. Based at Tiger Tiger’s Lucky Voice karaoke pods, the organisers hope to have 24 teams singing throughout the day and night.

The event, 24 Karaoke People, takes place this Wednesday, May 13 and they still need teams to sign up – so grab your gladrags and your mates and sing for Manchester.

Nick Massey, chief executive of The Community Foundation for Greater Manchester, explained, “Music and Greater Manchester have had a long relationship, having worked in perfect harmony to make the area an audible inspiration the world over. It makes perfect sense for us to acknowledge this and hopefully this will be the first of many musical fundraisers for Forever Manchester. And having Frank Sidebottom on board, a comedian who has been at the fore of the Manchester scene for years, is sure to be a massive boast to the success of the event.”

Forever Manchester is doing some great stuff in our city, raising awareness of lots of charities under one umbrella organisation. I was invited to the launch of the Manchester cocktail at Simple in the Northern Quarter recently, which was a mojito with ginger ale – an addition that worked really well.
